Optical Illusions

Do you perceive a white cylinder within the rings even though there are no edges to define it? This is an example of a three-dimensional illusory figure by Peter Tse (the pseudonym that I used).

The above paragraph is the caption to the 'white cylinder' optical illusion published by Workman Publishing in the 'Days of Illusions Calendar' for Wednesday, December 1, 2004.

Optical Illusion

I am not sure anymore when exactly I created the 'white cylinder' optical illusion, but I created a similar 'morning star' optical illusion on May 28, 1998, as part of the ASCII art cartoon on the right. As far as I know, prior ASCII art had always outlined the circle, whereas the white circle on the far right is perceived without an edge to define it.
